Making Decisions:
There are four steps we can use to help us make decisions about safety. These are:
1. Problem – Are you safe? (Are there any clues that help you to recognise if you are unsafe? Do you feel unsafe?)
2. Actions – What could you do? (How could you react?)
3. Result – What could happen if you do this? (Evaluate possible reactions.)
4. Decision – Which is the safest option? (Choose the best way to react in that situation.)

Safety Clues
Feeling Safe and Being Safe:
- We may be safe but feel unsafe (e.g. scuba-diving in a cage with sharks circling; waking up after a nightmare and discovering that we are safe in our bed; visiting the zoo and seeing poisonous snakes inside a glass cage)
- We can feel safe but be unsafe (e.g. swimming in the beach where there is a strong unobservable rip; patting a wandering dog that looks friendly but then growls and snaps)
Safe and Unsafe Situations:
- What possible risks/hazards/unsafe situations can you observe or predict by looking at the situation?
- How do clues alert you to possible risks?
RecogniseResponses should include being able to identify when a situation is safe or unsafe using the clues around you. This can include the LOOK, SOUND, SMELL and FEEL clues from both our surroundings and our own bodies.
ReactWhen we recognise an unsafe situation we need to react quickly if we can, to make the situation or ourselves safe.
When we react we also need to choose the safest option if we can. Sometimes this may mean we need to break the rules to make ourselves safe. ReportResponses may include: safety helper, who is an adult, who will listen to us and want to make us safe again, emergency services.
We should have a teacher or adult supervising us when using the internet. If we are uncertain about what we are seeing online or uncertain who we are chatting to when we are on the phone or online we need report it to an adult. |
